GUYETTE Volume 1 Boots And Heels
, published by Vasta Editions in an edition of 100 copies; measures 5.5 x 8", 36 pages + covers, digitally printed. Book #004 in the Vasta Editions Eros Series.
From the introduction:
When the well educated libertine thinks about the history of clandestine, underground
American photography, the work of John Willie comes
to mind, or that of Irving Klaw and his digest-sized magazines,
or Burmel’s Exotique. Left out of the conversation,
Charles
Guyette, whose work has fallen into obscurity. Very little is known
about Guyette, other than he died at the age of 74 in 1976.
He was active
in New York City in the 1930s-’50s as a creator
and supplier of custom-made theatrical accessories, burlesque
costumes, corsets and g-strings. He was also the middleman for
creators of custom-made footwear, a job for which the photos
reproduced in this volume were created.
While we know that Guyette was the distributor of these
photographs, it’s unclear who created them in the first place.
Was it Guyette himself? An employee? Perhaps a client from
Germany or a collaborator? We may never know for certain. We
do know that he ran ads in the 1930s-’40s for his creations in New
York magazines like
The Police Gazette,
Harrison Publications,
Whisper, Eyeful
, and
Beauty Parade
. Ads for photographs have
been found in the legendary English publication,
London Life
.
This first collection of Guyette photographs is devoted to boots and unusual high heels. The photographs, not surprisingly, are focused on the footwear, not the faces of the models. All are reproduced from original photos in the Vasta Archives. Most of the images are faded or stained due to improper lab work at the time of development, likely because of improper rinsing and fixing of the prints. We’ve chosen to reproduce the photographs as they were originally discovered 25 years ago, including the edge trims, many of which are uneven or asymmetrical.
